Aboriginal Supported Child Development (ASCD) is a provincial program, funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) that is designed to specifically meet the needs of Aboriginal children with special needs. ASCD recognizes that inclusion and providing early intervention and support in child care settings during the early stages of development is important. ASCD enables children who require extra support to be included in a childcare, preschool or after-school setting when their parents or caregivers are working or going to school.

In 2013, there are currently 46 different ASCD sites in varying stages of development. The different ASCD sites range in service delivery from some programs being “Capacity Building Initiatives”, some programs providing “Consultant only” services, and approximately 17 sites offering full ASCD services. ASCD sites that are “Capacity Building Initiatives” are in the process of developing their own program.

Designed to ensure cultural safety and cultural sensitivity for First Nations, Metis, and Inuit children and families, the ASCD program provides services for children who require extra support in the following areas:

  • Physical Development
  • Cognitive Development
  • Communicative Development
  • Social/Emotional Development
  • Behaviour

Purpose of Aboriginal Supported Child Development

To enable children who require extra supports to be included in child care settings and communities. Such inclusion nutures a child’s self-esteem, identity, and allows the children to participate in settings that will support their development along with their peers. Having a child care setting where children can get the supports they need to be included, allows them to grow and learn in a safe and nuturing environment. ASCD programs are developed with cultural values, beliefs, and traditions in mind.
